OPCs are a class of condensed tannin bioflavonoids composed of catechin and epicatechin monomers linked in chains (oligomers and polymers), with antioxidant capacity estimated in certain assays to exceed vitamin C by 20-fold and vitamin E by 50-fold. Crucially, OPCs are among the rare antioxidants that are both water-soluble and lipid-soluble, allowing them to protect cellular components in both the aqueous cytoplasm and the lipid-rich cell membrane simultaneously.

Research on grape seed OPCs has documented several specific mechanisms of cardiovascular benefit: they support endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) activity for healthy vasodilation and blood pressure regulation; they inhibit LDL oxidation, which is the initiating step in atherosclerotic plaque formation; they support capillary integrity through collagen cross-linking stabilization; and they inhibit platelet aggregation for healthy blood flow.
