Antarctic Krill Oil — Phospholipid-Bound Omega-3s with Natural Astaxanthin
Dr. Mercola Krill Oil provides omega-3 EPA and DHA from Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) in phospholipid form — a structurally distinct and potentially superior delivery format compared to the triglyceride form found in standard fish oils. In fish oil, EPA and DHA are esterified to triglyceride backbones; in krill oil, they are bound to phospholipids — the same structural lipids that make up human cell membranes. This structural similarity means phospholipid-bound omega-3s may be more directly incorporated into cell membranes and have been shown in comparative studies to produce comparable plasma omega-3 concentrations at lower doses than equivalent amounts of fish oil triglycerides.
Krill oil contains natural astaxanthin (approximately 0.5–2mg per gram of krill oil), which provides two important functions: it serves as an endogenous antioxidant that stabilizes the omega-3 fatty acids against oxidation during digestion and storage (krill oil has a significantly higher oxidative stability than standard fish oil), and it provides direct antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits in its own right. Because Antarctic krill are among the smallest and most abundant marine organisms — at the very base of the food chain — they accumulate dramatically lower levels of heavy metals, PCBs, dioxins, and other marine contaminants than the large fatty fish (sardines, anchovies, mackerel) used in fish oil production.
- Phospholipid-bound omega-3 EPA and DHA — cell membrane-compatible delivery format
- Natural astaxanthin — oxidative stability and antioxidant benefits
- Antarctic-sourced — lowest heavy metal and contaminant risk in the omega-3 category
- Supports brain, heart, joint, and immune health
- 60 capsules per bottle; non-GMO, gluten-free, soy-free
