Pantethine is the biologically active form of pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) — specifically, it is the disulfide of pantetheine, which is the active carrier component of coenzyme A (CoA). Unlike pantothenic acid itself, which must be converted to CoA through a multi-step enzymatic pathway, pantethine is much more directly incorporated into CoA, making it the most pharmacologically active form of B5 for clinical applications targeting CoA-dependent metabolism.
