Selenium is the essential component of three selenoprotein deiodinase enzymes (DIO1, DIO2, DIO3) that convert the largely inactive T4 into active T3 in peripheral tissues — selenium deficiency impairs T4-to-T3 conversion independently of iodine or zinc status.
